President of the Evergreen Teachers’ Association and
Member-at-Large of the Provincial Executive of The Manitoba Teachers’ Society
Biography
Jay Ewert has taught in Manitoba for over 15 years in Evergreen School Division in classrooms across the division ranging from grade 6-12, and is currently subbing all grades as he serves part-time as the President of Evergreen Teachers’ Association (ETA).
Jay’s philosophy is to provide a learning environment where students feel confident to try and challenged to succeed. This philosophy is evident within his union work with Members, with emphasis on Member safety, listening to understand, and directly supporting Members to raise their capacity in working together.
In the ETA, Jay served was the Collective Bargaining Chair for seven years prior to accepting the role of President in the spring of 2020, when Members were in dire need for strong leadership.
He is a very active Member within the Society; taking part in the CBSC for four years, a proud member of the MTS Labour School, serving on the Provincial Executive for the past two years where he has served as the Chair of the Education Finance Standing Committee, and additional MTS committees as necessary to see to the needs of all Members. These experiences have steeled Jay’s ability to do work not only for the Membership, but also, on himself, so that he may continually improve in his ability to support and represent.
Jay is currently living in the Interlake, where he works directly alongside Members of the ETA. He enjoys many hobbies including local musical performances, long runs on cold mornings, and investing in time with family.
I believe that unionism begins, relies upon, resolves, and renews with Membership voice.
